Lifestyle factors

Skin aging process is influenced by both intrinsic and extrinsic factors. While degradation of collagen and elastin fibers as well as the reduced quality of the body's own hyaluronic acid are mainly genetically encoded, there are extrinsic or lifestyle factors which we all can control to a certain degree to reduce skin aging.

Smoking and drinking, excessive sun exposure and stress, can all speed up the biological clock. However, of all these aging factors sun damage by UVR poses the greatest threat.

Restylane products cannot turn back the passage of time. However, they can restore skin hydrobalance and improve the skin structure and elasticity, as well as fill out wrinkles and folds and restore facial volume.

Facial aging

Facial aging is due to changes in several types of tissue, including skin, fat, muscle, and bone. Changes in any one of these structural layers affect the other layers.

Skin

As skin ages, the middle layer of skin (dermis) thins due to collagen loss. The skin’s ability to retain elasticity (from elastin) and moisture (from hyaluronic acid) also reduce with age.

Due to this loss of elastin and hyaluronic acid, the skin becomes:

  • drier
  • less elastic
  • less supple
  • thinner

Fat

In the face, fat is organized into fat pads. As we age, the fat is lost or redistributed, and the fat pads shift relative to each other. Over time, bony features, lines, and wrinkles become more visible.

Bone

There is a significant loss of facial bone with age. Aging of the craniofacial skeleton may be due to changes in the relative dynamics of bone expansion and bone resorption.

Bone recession leads to thinner bone, removing structural support for the overlying tissues. This loss of support contributes to sagging and droopiness and noticeable changes in the other layers of overlying soft tissue and skin.

Hyaluronic acid and aging

The Restylane range of products is designed to act like your body’s own naturally produced hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid, HA, is a molecule that offers support and structure to our tissues throughout the body, including our skin, protecting it from damage.  HA keeps our skin hydrated and firm through its ability to bind water molecules.

However, as we age, the natural production of HA by our bodies changes. Our skin can become thinner, dehydrated and less firm, losing its radiance and youthful appearance.

The Restylane range utilizes two technologies to stabilize highly pure HA into a gel form that allows it to last long in the skin, smoothing the surface, and providing lift and support where needed.

FAQs

What Is Restylane?

Restylane is used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane is also indicated for lip augmentation.

How does Restylane Work?

Restylane works immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane is specifically formulated to act like your body's own hyaluronic acid. So, you can use Restylane to visibly reduce moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, and to add fullness to your lips.

What are dermal fillers? What is hyaluronic acid?

Dermal fillers are facial injection treatments used to help diminish wrinkles while restoring volume and fullness in the face. There are several types of dermal fillers, one being hyaluronic acid. All Restylane products are transparent hyaluronic acids, which are sugars naturally found in the skin that help provide hydration, fullness and elasticity.

What causes facial wrinkles?

Wrinkles are part of life — our skin changes as we age. It becomes thinner, loses fat, and no longer looks as plump and smooth as it once did. Facial aging actually begins in your 20s, when skin firmness begins to decrease as a result of both internal (genetics and natural aging) and external (sun exposure, smoking, pollution, sleeping positions, etc.) factors.

How long do Restylane treatments last?

With full treatment, you can see lasting results for up to 18 months with Restylane;4* up to 12 months in the cheeks.

How long does it take Restylane treatments to work?

Depending on your volume needs, most Restylane treatment appointments last less than an hour and begin to work almost immediately by adding volume to smooth away wrinkles. A clear gel formulation of hyaluronic acid, Restylane products act like your body's own hyaluronic acid (and eventually break down naturally). Each Restylane product is designed for a specific purpose.

What are the side effects of Restylane products?

After your treatment, you may experience side effects, such as swelling, redness, pain, bruising, headache and itching at injection site and tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14-18 days in lips. Patients should be limited to 6.0 mL per treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. Swelling may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years.

How many treatments of Restylane products are needed?

Initial Restylane treatments are usually complete in one or two sessions, as needed. Depending on your individual body chemistry, you will work with your specialist to determine a maintenance schedule. Talk to your physician or healthcare professional about your individual needs.

Who should not use Restylane products?

The Restylane family of products should not be used by people who:

  • Are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18 years for nasolabial folds and under 22 years for lips.
  • Have recently used drugs that thin the blood or prevent clotting.
  • Have had previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria.
  • Have serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment.
  • Have bleeding disorders.
  • Have a known allergy to lidocaine.

A small amount of Restylane Fillers or Restylane Skinboosters is injected into the skin through a fine needle or blunt micro-cannula to fill wrinkles or add volume, shape your face or lips or rejuvenate your skin. After injection, your practitioner may gently massage the treated area to even out the result.

A treatment with Restylane does not take long. Depending on the area and indication, it takes approximately 15-45 minutes. A touch-up treatment is sometimes performed approximately two weeks after the initial treatment to optimize the results.

Some people may experience the treatment as a mild discomfort. Many Restylane products contain an integrated local anesthetic, lidocaine, to provide you with a more comfortable treatment experience, and Restylane also comes with special needles for easy skin penetration. You and your clinician may decide whether additional pain relief is needed.

As Restylane is a non-permanent injectable product, the effect gradually diminishes with time. In order to maintain the aesthetic result, top-up treatments are recommended. Results may vary depending on treatment areas.

Restylane is a gel of hyaluronic acid generated by Streptococcus species of bacteria, chemically crosslinked with BDDE, stabilized and suspended in phosphate buffered saline at pH=7 and concentration of 20 mg/mL.
